Women's Rights

A DISCUSSION ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS.
SIR HERCULUS FITZANAK ADMITS THAT WOMEN OCCASIONALLY RIVAL MEN IN INTELLECT AND CHARACTER, BUT CONTENDS THAT THEIR INFERIORITY IN STRENGTH AND STATURE WILL PROVE AN INSUPERABLE BAR TO THEIR EVER BEING PLACED ON A FOOTING OF EQUALITY WITH THE STERNER SEX. MISS MILLICENT MILLEFLEURS SAYS NOTHING, BUT THINKS A GREAT DEAL.

  1. Very nice. The difference in height of the two people (the woman being taller) the self-opinionated look on the man's face and the dark expression on the woman's face all add up to give credibility to "...but thinks a great deal".

Very nicely done. (A good example of the longer cartoon captions that were in vogue then, in contrast to the brief ones of today.)

  2. The cartoonist is George Du Maurier (Daphne's father) and he was definitely a genius when it comes to a certain facial expression. The caption is ridiculously long and could easily be edited to half its length, which, to a modern reader, would be preferable ... but I still quite like it.
