Published in 1849, the action takes place earlier in the late 1820s. The descriptions of Liverpool of that period are very interesting. Of note, by this time the Atlantic slave trade had been abolished so the port of Liverpool had declined somewhat due to the suppression of that trade and the money made from shipping such cargo.
